5-day Training program  based on the PMBOK® Guide Sixth Edition

Objective of the Program

Objective of this training program is to prepare the participants for taking Project Management Professional® Certification Examination conducted by the Project Management Institute®, USA. This program fulfills the mandatory requirement of 35 Contact Hours for taking the PMP® examination.

The Training program is based on “A Guide to the Project Management Body of knowledge®” – Sixth Edition.  The coverage of topics is according to the outline for PMP® examination.

Purpose of the Training Program

The training program is designed to enhance the project management skills of the participants and align it to the Internationally recognized PMBOK® Guide, by providing a deeper understanding of project management concepts, in order to enable them manage projects effectively.

The topics covered in the program help the participants understand the various core knowledge areas of project management viz. Stakeholder management, Scope, Schedule, Cost and Quality management, with emphasis on facilitating knowledge areas of Communications, Resource, Risk and Procurement management and Integration of all project management skills.

The ideal candidate for this program should have a minimum work experience of 3+ years in leading and managing projects, and wishing to attain the PMP® Certification.

Day 1

Session 1.1: Overview of the Project Management Framework

Session objectives are to:

  • Introduce the PMBOK® Guide
  • Understand what is a project
  • Understand the difference between operations and projects
  • Understand key Project Management definitions and concepts
  • Introduce the PMBOK® Guide Framework

Session 1.2: Organizational Context of Projects

Session objectives are to:

  • Understand linking of projects with organizational strategies
  • Understand importance of Project Management in today’s business environment
  • Understand origin of projects
  • Understand project selection methods
  • Understand difference between Portfolio, Program and Projects
  • Know about the types of organizations that undertake projects


Day 2

Session 2.1: Initiating the project

Session objectives are to:

  • Understand the processes in Initiating process group
  • Understand the process of Initiating projects in Functional organizations
  • Understand the process of developing project charter
  • Understand the process of outsourcing the project to Projectized organization

Session 2.2: Stakeholders in a Project

Session objectives are to:

  • Understand different types of stakeholders in a project
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of a project manager

Session 2.3: Planning the project

Session objectives are to:

  • Overview of the processes in Planning process group
  • Components of the project management plan
  • Understand project life cycle and project phases
  • Bring out the essential differences between Project Life Cycle processes and Project Management Processes

Session 2.4: Overview of the Project Management Professional Examination

Session objectives are to:

  • Understand the PMBOK® Guide Framework
  • Understand the present PMP® examination structure
  • Overview of the application process for PMP® Examination

Day 3

Session 3.1:     Planning Process Group – Scope Management

Session objectives are to:

  • Understand the concept of planning processes in Project management
  • Study the Scope management processes in detail, along with the Inputs, outputs and Tools & Techniques for each process
  • Understand the importance of project scope management
  • Understand the processes to develop a scope statement and developing a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
  • Understand the advantages of WBS – its application in project resource management, project cost management, and other planning processes

Session 3.2:     Planning Process Group – Schedule Management

Session objectives are to:

  • Study the Schedule management processes in detail, along with the Inputs, outputs and Tools & Techniques for each process
  • Understand the project scheduling concepts such as Gantt charts, milestone charts and critical path and usefulness of these techniques to a project manager

Session 3.3:     Planning Process Group – Cost Management

Session objectives are to:

  • Study the Cost management processes in detail, along with the Inputs, outputs and Tools & Techniques for each process
  • Understand and appreciate the importance of cost estimating and budgeting processes, and usefulness of these to a project manager

Day 4

Session 4.1:     Planning Process Group – Quality Management

Session objectives are to:

  • Study the Quality management processes in detail, along with the Inputs, outputs and Tools & Techniques for each process
  • Understand various quality management tools and techniques, and their importance in a project

Session 4.2:     Project Planning Process Group – Risk Management

Session objectives are to:

  • Understand concepts in risk management
  • Understand the processes in Project Risk Management and associated inputs, outputs and tools & techniques

Session 4.3:     Planning Process Group – Resource and Communications Management

Session objectives are to:

  • Understand the importance of project resource management complemented by the general organizational skills
  • Appreciate the key process of project organizational planning, staff acquisition and team development in the success of a project
  • Understand the communications requirement for effective PM – its nature, processes, tools / techniques.
  • Identify the factors facilitating and hindering the communications

Session 4.4:     Project Planning Process Group – Procurement Management

Session objectives are to:

  • Understand the role of project procurement management.
  • Know the different types of contracts and the risks associated with each type
  • Understand the processes in Project Procurement Management and associated inputs, outputs and tools & techniques

Session 4.5:     Executing Process Group

Session objectives are to:

  • Understand various Project Executing processes in Project management, and study the project executing process in detail, along with the Inputs, outputs and Tools & Techniques for each process


Day 5

Session 5.1:     Monitoring & Controlling Process Group

Session objectives are to:

  • Understand the importance of Project Monitoring & Controlling processes in Project management and study these process in detail, along with the Inputs, outputs and Tools & Techniques for each process

Session 5.2:     Closing Process Group and Professional Responsibility & Code of Conduct

Session objectives are to:

  • Understand the importance of Project Closing processes in Project management and study these process in detail, along with the Inputs, outputs and Tools & Techniques for each process

Session 5.3:     Earned Value Management

Session objectives are to:

  • Understand the concepts of EVM and how they are used in reporting, monitoring & controlling, and forecasting.

Session 5.4:     PMI Professional Responsibility & Code of Conduct

Session objectives are to:

  • Know about PMI® Code of Professional Conduct
  • Understand and appreciate the importance of ethical practices and code of conduct in project management domain
